After much googling I found the issue was the fact that activeX controls seemed to be playing havoc with the buttons I mentioned above. I disabled all the activex controls in tools->manage add ons, and restarted the computer. After restarting visiting different websites requested that I tured only some of them on. The couple that I turned on allowed me to access facebook with no errors on page and everything working fine. I apologise for my description as I don't work in IT and have little idea about computers and their OS these days hehe..
